What's running when
All five species of Pacific salmon swim the waters around Prince Rupert — the main targets are chinook and coho — over a bottom that holds halibut, lingcod and rockfish in numbers few places can match.
Migratory runs from April. Peak mid-May to early August. Average 15–25 lb; 30–40 lb not uncommon, 50 lb+ weighed in every year.
Spectacular off-season fishery in the protected waters of Prince Rupert Harbour. Scrappy 8–15 lb fish, October through April.
From late June at 5–8 lb, building in size and numbers to 12–15 lb by the end of September. Peak late July to mid-September — bring the fly rod.
Some of the best halibut fishing on the west coast. Fish to 80 lb are common, 100 lb+ a real possibility, and 200 lb+ halibut are caught every season.
Healthy lingcod populations on the many pinnacles and shelves, plus abundant rockfish. Generous bottom-fish limits.
DFO may adjust salmon retention limits in season to protect at-risk stocks — chinook retention closures have occurred some years, generally mid-June to mid-July. Sunset Charters releases all chinook over 30 lb (tyee) to help preserve the genetics of these remarkable fish for future generations.

The overnight dock sits in a remote bay minutes from some of the best salmon and halibut hotspots on the coast. Home for the night is a 14×16 deluxe canvas wall tent with a wood stove and comfortable cots, a covered outdoor kitchen with propane stove, oven, barbecue and crab cooker — and a fire pit at the end of the dock for when the day's fishing is done.
Bring your meals, a sleeping bag and a pillow; cookware, basic spices and condiments are stocked in camp. Fresh crab straight from the trap is strongly encouraged.
